Sicamous Ferry Society

There are moments in a community’s story that remind you exactly what makes rural British Columbia so special. The creation of the Sicamous Ferry Society is one of those moments.

What began as a practical response to a real challenge—limited access to the Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail due to ongoing highway construction—quickly became something more.

Faced with barriers, this community didn’t wait. They stepped forward, collaborated, and created a solution that serves both residents and visitors alike: a free pedestrian ferry connecting people back to one of our region’s most valued outdoor experiences.

That matters.

The Rail Trail is more than just a pathway. It’s a place where families walk, cyclists explore, and people from all over come to experience the beauty of the Shuswap. Ensuring access to it—especially during disruptions—was no small task. And yet, through the leadership and initiative of local volunteers and organizers, the Sicamous Ferry Society made it happen.

But what stands out most isn’t just the service itself—it’s what it represents.

This ferry is not simply a mode of transportation. It’s a reflection of the character of Sicamous. It shows what’s possible when a community sees a need and takes ownership of the solution. It’s creative. It’s welcoming. And it adds yet another layer to what already makes this region such a unique destination.

In just one season, the ferry has become part of the experience. It’s something people talk about, something they remember, and something that brings people together.

That’s the beauty of rural communities. They don’t just adapt, they innovate.

I want to commend everyone involved in bringing this project to life. Your work has not only solved a problem, but enhanced what makes Sicamous such a special place to live and visit.

This is community at its best.
