Today, we proudly join Canadians from coast to coast in celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day—a day to recognize and honour the rich cultures, traditions, and history of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across the country.
Here in the beautiful Shuswap and North Okanagan region, we have the privilege of living on the traditional and unceded territories of the Neskonlith, Skwlax te Secwepemculecw, Splatsin, and Okanagan peoples. For thousands of years, these Nations have been the stewards of this land—caring for its lakes, rivers, forests, and wildlife with deep wisdom and respect.

From the towering Enderby Cliffs to the shimmering shores of Shuswap Lake, every part of our region tells stories that stretch back through generations. These are lands of deep cultural significance, connection, and community.
Today is a joyful opportunity to celebrate these stories—and to take time to learn more, share in the traditions, and build relationships grounded in respect and understanding. Whether you’re attending a local event, enjoying Indigenous art and music, supporting Indigenous-owned businesses, or simply taking a moment of reflection outdoors, I encourage everyone to participate in the spirit of celebration and community.
To our neighbours from Neskonlith, Skwlax te Secwepemculecw, Splatsin, and Okanagan Nations—thank you for your enduring leadership and for sharing your knowledge, culture, and care for this beautiful land we all call home.
Happy National Indigenous Peoples Day!
