Give input on how the Human Rights Commissioner is appointed and operates

Make Your Voice Heard. This is your chance to give input on how the Human Rights Commissioner is appointed and operates, ensuring this Commissioner remains effective in defending and promoting human rights across the province.

A special committee of the BC Legislative Assembly is currently reviewing sections 47.01 to 47.24 of the BC Human Rights Code. You can read the code here: https://www.bclaws.gov.bc.ca/civix/document/id/complete/statreg/00_96210_01#section47.01

Specifically, these sections are all about the BC HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSIONER, outlining their role and responsibilities and how they are appointed.

This is an important position and public insight is crucial.

WHAT DOES THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSIONERS?

The Human Rights Commissioners job is to help make sure everyone in B.C. is treated fairly--no matter who they are. They don't take sides like a judge and they don't deal with complaints from individuals, rather, the look at the bigger-picture. Their job is to look at the whole of our Province and ask:

  • Are some groups of people being treated unfairly more often?

  • Are there systems, rules, or habits in society that are hurting people or making things unequal?

  • What can be done to stop discrimination before it happens?

The Human Rights Commissioner helps protect fairness and equality for everyone. Without the right person in this position discrimination could go unnoticed or unchallenged, and people in power might make rules that hurt certain groups.
